Since moving to London in 2014 Yelfris has been mixing Cuban music (including Carlos Acosta’s Cubania at the Royal Opera House) with jazz, reggae and African sounds (Dele Sousimi, The London Afrobeat Collective, Lokki Terra and Grupo Lokito), playing at both Glastonbury (2008) and WOMAD (2005, 2008). They are joined on stage by Special Guest Yelfris Valdes, the trumpet player from Sierra Maestra - one of the most iconic son bands in Cuba. But the piece itself – in which bumpkin ballet boy Acosta discovers his hips through the love of feisty latina chica Veronica Corveas and so is accepted into the gang of strutty kingpin Alexander Verona – is as hokey as can be.Weaving funky rhythms into sophisticated mambos, Ran Kan Kan conjure melodies of heart-stopping beauty into the foot-tapping music of the golden years of Cuban big bands … for you to dance to. The easy mix of styles (ballet, contemporary, African, Latin) and the sheer vitality of the group's numbers are infectious. The second half of the evening is given over to Acosta's own Tocororo Suite, which he performs with Danza Contemporánea de Cuba. Sight Unseen, by New Yorker Edwaard Liang, is memorable largely for the magnetic presence of Zenaida Yanowsky, for whom Acosta acts as both foil and frame. It's the biomechanics of the work that command attention: the blend of sapling suppleness with constructivist composition, short motifs iterated, distributed and divided up in a kind of choreographic calculus. One of the top drummers on the scene today, Jamie Murray makes his SoundCellar debut with his all star group ‘Evolution’, featuring US alto sax virtuoso David Binney, legendary UK electric bassist Laurence Cottle and rising star guitarist David Preston.
